Latham, New York– Spectra Engineering, Architecture and Surveying, P.C. has announced that President John H. Shafer, PE has won the Class C national championship in the Porsche Club of America – Club Racing program for 2014. The award was presented to Shafer on January 28, 2015 in Sebring, Florida.
Shafer, 76, in his first year of competing, won the award by accumulating the highest number of points nationally over several road races on four different race tracks. He drives a 1984 Porsche 9285S that has been modified from a street GT car to race car, fully meeting the Porsche Club’s stringent equipment safety standards. Points are awarded for entering and finishing a race as well as for finishing high in each race.
“We are really proud of John and his accomplishments on and off the track,” said Spectra’s co-president Robert C. LaFleur. “At the office, we love to hear about his latest race and modification to his car. John’s constant pursuit of excellence throughout his career has been an inspiration to us at Spectra.”
Shafer and his 928 were also given a Corner Workers Award at the Watkins Glen International Racetrack in New York. These awards, coveted by racers, are based on voting by the dozens of volunteers staffing the safety flag stations around the track. Voting is based on the car’s appearance, safe driving during the race, and other personal factors.
Shafer said, “At Watkins Glen I am on the track racing with 70 other cars. Reaching over 120 miles per hour and being passed by other cars in faster classes is a great adrenaline rush, even at my age.” Shafer’s son John S. also races a Porsche, most of the time in the same races. Shafer Sr. says, “It is a great father/son activity. While I have more horsepower, I still can’t keep him behind me. He’s a better driver and thank goodness he is in a different race class!”
To enter Class C, the Porsche 928S has to be stock and weigh a minimum of 3589 pounds. In addition to a roll cage, harnesses, and other safety equipment, modifications may be made only to the suspension and exhaust systems.
John Shafer lives in Lake George, NY.
